Direct Station Select

The following table describes the result of selecting a DSS or Secretarial Transfer key for different host-set states and busy lamp (BLF) indications. (For a list of sets that support this feature, see Feature-Phone Matrix.)

DSS Directed Call Pickup

When a DSS key is pressed while the monitored device is ringing, the host set will perform a directed pickup of the ringing call. A directed call pickup cannot be made if the host set has a call on soft hold; nor is it possible to pick up a call on hold that is recalling the monitored device.

DSS Transfer

DSS keys can be used while a call is on soft hold to transfer the call to the monitored device. Both supervised and unsupervised transfers are supported. To perform an unsupervised transfer, press TRANS/CONF followed by the DSS key, and then hang up. For a supervised transfer, press the DSS key and wait for the monitored device to answer.

Other Host Set Call States

DSS keys are non-functioning in the following host set call states:

An example of the last scenario is if the feature access code for Call Forward Busy is entered and, then a DSS key is pressed to program call forward busy to the DSS key's monitored device. The DSS key will be ignored.

DND on Monitored Devices

DSS calls to a monitored device in Do Not Disturb state will usually return DND tone. An idle host set is permitted to perform a Directed Call Pickup of a new call ringing a monitored set that is in DND.

Presence on Monitored PRG or MdUG Primes

DSS calls to a monitored PRG or MdUG prime DN adheres to members' presence, that is, DSS calls will only ring the present members. If all the members of the group are absent, then the DSS call returns a DND tone.

DSS Override of Call Forwarding on Monitored Set

Both Secretarial Transfer and DSS keys, can override all forms of call forwarding on the monitored DN. This capability applies to direct calls and transfers to the monitored DN and requires the following configuration on the key host set and monitored DN:

Key host set:

Monitored DN:

Secretarial Transfer

Secretarial Transfer capability is provided when the line type of the DSS key is set to "secretarial" in the Multiline Set Keys form. Pressing a DSS key provisioned with this option while a call is on soft hold performs a supervised transfer to the associated device or directory number. For an unsupervised transfer, press the TRANS/CONF key followed by the DSS key, then hang up.

The call can be camped-on to the monitored number if the number is busy. If the monitored device has call forward or call rerouting active and the System Option, BLF – CFA Indication Based on Set Enabled is set to Yes, pressing the DSS key will override forwarding (but not rerouting).

The following scenarios illustrate behaviors associated with the secretarial transfer keys when the "BLF–CFA Indication Based on Set Enabled" System Option is enabled. In all scenarios the Boss is the monitored device and the secretary is the set hosting the secretarial transfer key.

Scenario :#1

  1. Boss is CFA to secretary causing the DSS/BLF key for the boss to flash on the secretary's set.

  2. Both boss and secretary sets are idle.

  3. Secretary presses the boss's DSS/BLF key.

  4. The boss's set rings, overriding CFA.

Scenario #2

  1. The boss's DSS/BLF key is flashing on secretary's set. (Boss is CFA to Secretary.)

  2. Incoming call to boss arrives and is forwarded to secretary.

  3. Secretary answers call and presses the boss's DSS/BLF key.

  4. The call is transferred unsupervised to the boss, overriding CFA.

For a supervised transfer, the secretary presses TRANS/CONF, then the boss's DSS/BLF, also overriding CFA.

Scenario #3

  1. Multiple secretaries have DSS/BLF appearance of the boss's prime DN. (Boss is CFA to Secretary #1. All DSS/BLF keys are flashings.)

  2. All sets are idle.

  3. Secretary #2 presses the DSS/BLF key to call the boss, overriding CFA.

Scenario #4

  1. Boss is is CFA to Secretary Secretary #1.

  2. Incoming call to boss arrives.

  3. Secretary #2 answers the call using a multicall appearance of secretary 1 (or CFA from Sec #1).

  4. Secretary #2 presses the boss's DSS/BLF key for unsupervised transfer— or TRANS/CONF then DSS/BLF for supervised transfer— to the boss, overriding CFA.

If the held party and the monitored set are interconnect restricted, automatic release is not attempted. If the set hosting the busy lamp has Brokers Call enabled, both parties are released.

Keys programmed for Secretarial Transfer otherwise operate as regular DSS keys.
